How often should I get my car serviced? Which service does my car need?
Your vehicle has very individual and specific service requirements based on the make, model, age, the overall mileage plus how many miles you’ve driven recently. Rather than offer a “one size fits all” service, once your car is with us we will check the on-board computer, service history and manufacturers recommendations.
If we think your car needs more attention then we will, of course, discuss this with you before proceeding with any additional work. Think of it as a personal package just for your car!
As a general “rule of thumb” you could consider these types of service:
When? | What is included? | |
---|---|---|
Full Service | At 6,000 miles, then alternate with a Small Service every approximately 10,000 miles | A comprehensive service covering includes the changing the engine oil, oil and air filters, pollen and fuel filters where applicable, plus other items that are need replacing every 2 years. Your car will receive a 110 point check. Checks include taking the wheels off to check the brakes thoroughly, all oil and fluid levels encompassing gear box and axles, strength of anti-freeze, battery condition, tyres, suspension …and more! |
Small Service | Alternate with a Full Service approximately every 10,000 miles | An across-the-board service with 49 checks. It includes the changing the engine oil, oil and pollen filters and an extensive range of checks to keep your car running at its best. |
Interim Service | For well-maintained, low-mileage vehicles | We will carry out 31 checks on your car giving it a general health check. If your oil looks nice and clean we will recommend that you don’t change it just yet. This is the ideal option if you drive very few miles, you are about to take your car on holiday or you simply don’t know what your car needs. |

Do I have to take my car back to the Main Dealer?
No, car servicing at an independent garage will not invalidate your manufacturer’s warranty and it can give you the benefit of a more personal and bespoke service.
When you bring your car to AJ Dunlop Car Servicing you can be assured your car is in safe hands: only approved parts will be used for your car and only the best grade of engine oil. All replacement parts of the same quality as the original so your manufacturer’s warranty will not be affected.
Simply let our Service Advisors know that the vehicle is still under warranty. Afterwards we will stamp your Service Book and your invoice will specify the approved parts fitted with the work carried out.
Why do you talk about oil? What difference does it make?
The right oil will lubricate the parts in your engine even when you start the motor from cold. A quality oil dramatically reduces wear and tear, corrosion and build-up of dirt and deposits in your engine. This will save you expensive repair costs and reduce the likelihood of an unpleasant breakdown.
Only Mobil 1 oils meet or exceed your manufacturer’s recommendation and will protect the engine for longer. Such a simple step for such a substantial benefit!
We will use one of the following for your car, based on the engine and the manufacturers recommendations:
